part 6 "Passing Sorrow's & forgotten times"
By BANE Huntress
Koenma sat behind his desk and frowned, he was back in Toddler form as he chewed on his dummy "I see... we can have the Urameshi team doing anything when you're two men down... And I can see why Hiei is reluctant to do anything if there newly bonded..." he chewed some more on his dummy "but I don't know anything about this shadow figure that's plaguing Kurama... Botan do you know anything?"
Botan wiped a tear away from her eye "I've never herd anything like it before" she frowned "I don't know".
"Hmm... Right I can see nothing else for it but to give you two another mission, and Hiei too if you can talk him into it.."
"WHAT!?" Yuusuke shrieked "you cant do this!...."
Koenma gave him a level look and the teenager shrank into silence "as I was saying" he continued "You have to see if you can find out who this thing is... I'll leave it up to you what you do with this person, it'' up to your discretion."
"Yess!" Yuusuke slammed one hand into the other "You can leave it all up to us Koenma!"
"Yaa.. We'll get this git and sort him out good and proper!" Kawabara piped up.
Koenma watched them leave his office in a rush, he sighed as his office fell silent for the first time in ages.
"amm... Koenma-sama?" Botan said meekly.
"amm?.. Can I go visit Kurama?"
He sighed again "so long as your quick" he said.
She grinned then grabbed her ore from hammer-space then dispeard.
Koenma leaned back in his chair and folded his podgy hand's over his tummy, *at last peace and quiet* he thought as there was a knock at the door and George poked his head in "Koenma-sama... there's some papers for you to look at"
"bring them in" he sighed as he reached for his stamper.
Yukina felt like something was wrong, she looked up from the book she was reading, trying to find something about what was wrong with Kurama.
"What is it?" Gankai, asked "have you found something?"
"Hu?..." Yukina shook herself "oww... no, I just feel like theirs something wrong." then she stood up feeling numb for some reason, the book she had been reading fell to the floor with a thump.
"Yukina!" Gankai said as she retrieved her book.
"I have to see Hiei" She said, but it sounded like someone else's voice "I think something's wrong."
She herd Gankai get up behind her and follow her as she went into the sitting room.
The first thing that greeted her eyes was Hiei sat with Kurama's head resting on his lap, the way she had left them.
"Hiei?" she whispered, thinking, hopping, that whatever it was, was just Hiei's own fear going across the bond that they shared as twines.
Hiei didn't respond or look up at her.
"Hiei?" she said again, more urgently this time. then she realised that Kurama was back in his Ningen form.
Finally Hiei moved, he took his hand from Kurama's, and the redhead's arm fell limply to the floor, without noticing Hiei reached up and put his hand on his partners forehead.
Yukina couldn't understand what was going on, then she saw that Kurama's eye's lay open staring at Hiei, but they were no longer there bright, vibrant emaral green. Instead dull green orbs looked at nothing, All the spark was gone, they no longer shone.
Yukina clasped a hand over her mouth as Hiei moved his hand over the lifeless eyes closing them forever.
She fell to her neas before them both and reached out to touch Kurama's face, but Hiei batted her hand away.
"He's gone" he said, his voice dull "Theirs nothing you can do for him now... let him be"
"But Hiei!?" tear's already blurred her vision, then she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"He's right...." Gankai said from behind her "Kurama's gone"
"It's not fair!" she wailed "this cant be happening!.. Hiei there must be something you can do! you can't let it end like this!"
Hiei moved slowly and stood up, rearranging Kurama's limp form as he did so, "Life isn't fair" he whispered, "and IT's ended Yukina..."
"Hiei! He loved you he just wouldn't give up on you like this! He'd want you to fight this!"
Hiei spun on her, but his eye's looked as dead as those he had just closed, the fire that had always burned, seemed extinguished in there crimson depths. "He did fight!" he stormed "He fought as best he could, but you cant fight forever!"
She looked up at him her mouth open "You have never stopped fighting Hiei..." she whispered "you never did"
Hiei looked away sharply "It wasn't my fight" he said bitterly "I... Kura... Kurama would not have given up... he... he fought as best he could... let him have his peace..." then he was gone in a displacement of air.
"Hiei!" she cried after him, then she turned to the eternal slumberer on the sofa "How could you do this to him!?" she stormed as the tears fell "if you loved him then why did you give up?... why?!" she sobbed. but the only answer she got was silence. "why!...?"
"come on Yukina" Gankai took her shoulders and pulled her to her feet "cant you feel Kurama's sorrow in the air?... he was exhausted..."
"but..." Yukina just couldn't accepted it. she had never seen Hiei so happy these last few day's.
"but nothing child... he didn't go willing... he just had nothing to fight with anymore" Gankai spoke reason as she pulled Yukina out of the room, "come on... we have to tell the others"
"But what about Hiei?" she sniffed.
"Hiei will come back when he's ready... He need's some time alone right now".
Yuusuke and Kawabara came back to a quite Temple, they waked into the kitchen to find Gankai making Tea and Yukina sobbing in to her arms on the kitchen table.
"Huu... what's going on?" Yuusuke asked orquadly.
"are you alright Yukina-san?" Kawabara asked leaning down to the small ice maiden, a look of concern on his face.
Yukina gave a cry and then throw her arms about his neck and sobbed into his broad chest, he held her carefully as if he was afraid to brake her.
"Gankai?... what's going on" Yuusuke asked again.
Gankai looked older as she turned to him, "your answer lies in the siting room" she said softly.
Yuusuke frowned "but..?!"
"why don't you just go look" she said with more patience.
Yuusuke did as he was told, he softly knocked on the door, when he got no answer he carefully pushed open the door and stepped inside, and he couldn't believe what met his eyes...
Hiei sat in a tree close to the temple. He had originally wanted to run all the way to the Makai and hide someplace, but something keped him close to the shell of the one who had, for a short time, been his. Too the first thing that had ever loved him for who he was. Too the one who had sneaked into his heart passed all the wall's he had built over years to protect himself from everything.
"You stole something from me too...". He said to the world, replying to ear's that couldn't hear him now. "Something I thought wasn't even there to steal..." He bent his head low and bit his lip on the pain that shot throw his chest "until you came..." he took a deep breath. "How could I ever hope to keep something that forbidden from your light fingered hand's?... I hope you enjoyed stealing my heart, also, Kurama..."
He wiped away the tear gem that fell onto his hand, The wind was picking up now, and dark clouds were quickly covering the sky, plunging everything into gloom. The tree's rustled a soft morning melody that went from branch to branch.
He didn't notice the flowers below him begin to close there petals and bow there head's to the cold air, shutting off there brilliant colour from the world as if they no longer wished anyone to see them if brilliant emerald eyes could no longer look upon them.
Hiei sighed deeply. He had to go back. He had to say goodbye, even if only to the shell of Kurama... he had to say the words before he fled back to the Makai forever.
Slowly he stood up, his legs felt unsure and wobbly, then he was gone.
A solitary figure watched his passing, as it stood not too far away, hidden by the shadows the clouds had made, all that could be seen as it also departed was a sudden flash of red.
Then nothing Human or demon watched as the forest mourned.
Yuusuke stood in the living room his mouth open in puzzlement, Gankai came in behind him.
"What's the meaning of this?" he asked her.
Gankai frowned then looked at the empty sofa. Her mouth fell open. "But...?"
Yuusuke throw himself on the sofa "so the revelation is that Kurama's gone to bed?" he asked with a razed eyebrow.
Gankai just stood there in shock, Yuusuke had never seen the old woman so ruffled.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Gankai was just about to say something when Yukina rushed in, the little ice maiden stopped immediately when she say Yuusuke on the sofa.
"Where's Kurama?" she gasped, tears gem's still fell from her eyes, "What have you don't to him?!"
Yuusuke scowled "I haven't seen Kurama since I left earlier" he said not liking to be accused of something he hadn't done "He's probably gone to bed or something"
"I think it would be a bit hard for him to go to bed when he died not an hour ago" Gankai said in her dry humour.
"WHAT?!" Yuusuke jumped to his feet, "what do you mean died?"
Yukina broke down in tears again as Kawabara came to her aid.
Gankai shock her head "Kurama passed away about an hour ago... there was nothing more we could do... and now his body is missing"
"But... But?" Yuusuke couldn't quite baleve what she was telling him, but she must be telling the truth or why was Yukina crying "where's Hiei then?... Maybe he took Kurama?"
"Hiei ran out of here... and I haven't felt him come back" Gankai sighed deeply "I don't think any of us will see him for a long time, if ever..."
The room fell silent as everyone tried to deal with there own thought's, only Yukina's sobbing broke the eary still.
Then everyone felt a dark Ki "Where's Kurama!" a deep voice asked.
"We were hoping you might be able to throw some light on that" Gankai said, she turned to face the small fire demon, "do you?"
Yuusuke looked closely at the little figure and noticed he didn't look angry like he always used to, now there was something even more frightening hidden in there dark depths, something that put Yuusuke on edge, there was nothing... not even grief, or anything remotely markubal as life.
"I left his corps here with you... I though that even you could have seen to it properly" Hiei said his voice calm and even "it would seem even that was beyond you"
"Hiei, that's not fair" Yuusuke snapped.
Hiei looked at him steadily "is it?"
Yuusuke looked away from the dead red eyes "Look... I bet that shadow thing Kurama was on about is behind this.."
"That's obvious" Hiei answered.
Yuusuke bit his lip, Hiei was in no mood to take anything he was going to say right now, Even Kawabara did nothing but stare at the little Kurime. "Koenma said we were to see if we could find out who this shadow is, and then do what we see fit to it... I say now we have no other choice but to find out what they where up to and then sort him out!"
"Got that right" Kawabara said with determination.
"Hn.. What's the point" Hiei snapped.
Yuusuke sighed "don't you want to find out who took Kurama.. and probably who killed him?"
Hiei hissed but remaind quiet.
"The clues have to be in this room" Yuusuke said determinedly "It was the last place Kurama saw the thing and as you say the last place he was seen"
"That's right" Gankai said "But none can get in the grounds never mind this room without me knowing about it"
"But some one did" Hiei said quietly and there was a note of threat in it.
Gankai gave him a cold look, "fine look if you want, I cant sense anything..." Then she walked out the room.
Yuusuke walked over to the window, it was shut tight "hmm... Hiei you better at sensing stuff... can you find anything?"
Hiei huffed then wriped off the bandanna covering his third eye and throw it to the floor.
"Well?" Yuusuke asked after a bit, Hiei hadn't moved and he was getting worried, the fire demons normal eye's were wide open, and as he watched he saw a little black tear gem fall. "Hiei?"
Finally the third eye closed and Hiei fell to his nease "I... "
Yuusuke knelt on the floor infrunt of him "Are you all right?"
Hiei looked up, his face now showed the level of his grief, "Kurama..." he whispered, the shock him self, "Some one was here" he said "I can fallow them... they... They have Kurama..."
"Do you know who it is?" Yuusuke asked, at last they had something.
Hiei hung his head down "No... I've never felt anything like it... it's not any kind of Ki I've ever come across before... but I can follow it".
"Good... lets get after it and make it wish it had never messed with the Uramashi team!"
Hiei stood but made no move to retrieve the ward he kept over his Jpqueen.
"Amm?... what's everyone doing?"
Yuusuke spun round to see Botan stood in the door way looking a little confused.
"We have no time to explain" Yuusuke said hurriedly "we'll explain on the way... come on Hiei... Lead the way!"
"This is our future?"
"Have faith Brother... You will see".
"Will I?... We have all placed a lot in this, if you are wrong.."
"IF... If Brother... if I am wrong then there is no hope for us... we will perish"
"You are sure?"
"I am... We have no choice... have faith"
"Faith?... There's not enough of that left..."
"Hmm... Well then find some"
"What will you do... It seems to all rest solely in your hands now?"
"I will do what I must... I have my way's"
"Even if it mean's degrading you self?"
"I wouldn't call it that... Not at all..."
"Humf... One day your toys will turn round and bit you"
"One day... Until then I will do what needs to be done... even if that means I have some fun first"
Eyes open to darkness, the air was chill and damp and smelled musty, like old cellar's left locked for to long.
A feeling of another standing close by, "Who's there?" the voice quivered.
A hand touched Face, soft and warm, the voice that broke the silence friendly and inviting, "You awaken?" it said "You had me worried"
"Sorry" the innocent reply.
An amused chuckle "Close you eyes I'll turn the light on"
Lid's closed as suddenly red seeped through them.
"There that's better" the voice said.
Again eyes opened to see someone else's, as golden as the sun, looked down Kindly. Blue, black hair cascaded down and around the others shoulder's in waves.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled "My name is Kurayami, How are you feeling?"
"I'm cold" a shiver ran over flesh "Who am I?"
Kurayami reached out and took the face in his hand's "You are GinHikari... I've been waighting for you for a very long time"
"You have?" GinHikari said, not questioning the most beautifullist person he had ever seen, about his name. "Why?"
Kurayami chuckled again "It's not important right now... I bought you something to drink... it will worm you up".
Without question GinHikari let Kurayami help him drink the warm, thick red liquid. It tasted bitter, sweat almost metallic, but it slid down this throat easily, warming him as it did so.
"Better?" Kurayami asked with a smile, as he took the cup away, now empty.
GinHikari licked his lips, "I cant seem to remember anything?" he frowned, it was the oddest feeling, but then he didn't know what he should be feeling, was he meant to be here?, Kurayami seemed to know who he was and he was taking care of him... What had made him loos his memory?... Something tried to tug at his mind...
"It's to be expected" Kurayami said taking his mind of something he was trying to figure out.
Kurayami nodded, "You where outside in the cold for a long time before I found you... You were attacked by some demon an left for dead... I managed to get too you in time" he said and he honestly looked sad as he looked away.
GinHikari, for that must be his name, reached out and laid a hand on the others arm "I'm all right now..." he smiled at the other man reassuringly, "I just cant seem to remember anything..."
Kurayami looked back up at him, his golden eyes brimming with tears "I know..." he whispered, "At least your back with me and that's all that counts... Right?" he smiled again... only sadly.
GinHikari frowned the man's reactions where puzzling "what am I to you?" he found himself asking.
Kurayami looked away again, "we are... we were lovers..." the dark hair'd man whispered softly.
GinHikari sat wide eyed for a moment as he ran the sentence through his head... Lovers?... He wished he could remember anything, but nothing came... He looked at Kurayami closely, he could see why he would have been attracted to this man, he was beautiful and his movement's elegant and smooth.
GinHikari bit his lip "I... I don't remember" he said again, "but... but if you know who I am... Then... Then maybe... you could help me remember".
Kurayami turned, his cheeks covered with tears "You?..." then he smiled such a warm and welcoming smile GinHikari couldn't help but feel something for him, "I will try and help you get your memory back Gin... I promise I will..." He took his face in his hands again "I thought I might have lost you forever!", Then he lent forwards and kissed him soundly.
GinHikari felt strong arms wrap about his waste, at first he felt overwhelmed by it all, as the other man began to lay him back on the bed, he didn't know what to do. It didn't feel wrong, but nether did it feel right.
Kurayami Kissed him again and he gave up on trying to figure anything out. He could remember nothing of his life before this moment and this man definitely seemed to know him... He wrapped his own arms about Kurayami's neck as he gave him self to the other, before the fear he was starting to feel, over took him and he lost his mine to insanity.
